Redemption

Updated: Dec 29, 2024

In 2014 I was medically retired from the military because I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition (+ PTSD & TBI) I was told that not only could I no longer serve in the military but that I would NEVER be able to work any job for the rest of my life. For the next few years I was given lots of medication and spent several months a year in hospitals. At the age of 32 I received retirement a disability check and a label stating I'm no longer able to function in society. I accepted that label and lived my life according to it but all the while I knew that I was capable of so much more than what my medical condition said I was. I attended therapy and I attended every meeting at an organization called Athena's Sisters where I could connect with other veteran women and hear their stories. At times I didn't understand what was going on from day to day (due to the strong medication regimen) but I persisted) I spent 3 years of my life fighting a medical condition that no one could see and being constantly reminded of my limitations by medical professionals. But I am happy to say that today I worked my first full day at my dream job. I went to work not because I had to but because I wanted to. Today I proved all the medical professionals wrong! I completed the two day orientation Friday and Saturday with no problems and today I spent 9hrs working. I am so grateful for this opportunity!!! Thank you to everyone who has stood by me these last few years! I am living proof that your condition doesn't dictate who you are, your heart does and you should follow your dreams no matter what. Life has not been easy and I'm not healed, cured, relieved or whatever its called from my medical condition but I strongly believe the best is yet to come!
